A unique palace called Plaza Athénée

Paris - France - On a sunny afternoon in Paris, with mild temperatures, it’s impossible not to be captivated by the famous red geraniums that adorn the façade of Hôtel Plaza Athénée. This image, known a postcard of Avenue Montaigne, is more than an aesthetic detail: it’s a symbol of the tradition and elegance that define this century-old hôtel-palace. Stepping inside and being greeted with warm smiles and genuine courtesy marks the beginning of an immersion into a world where history and modernity walk hand in hand. Welcoming us personally is François Delahaye, Chief Operating Officer of the Dorchester Collection and General Manager of Plaza Athénée, a master of "savoir-faire français". 

We stayed here before the pandemic and have returned several times since, drawn by the seasonal menus of the hotel’s restaurants, which remain a top recommendation for those seeking haute cuisine with Parisian soul. Much has changed in the world after the pandemic and the Olympic Games. At the “Plazá,” as regulars affectionately call it, changes have also taken place but without losing the essence of this palace and its “art de vivre à la française”.

“I can say we’re better than ever. Occupancy is high, loyal guests are returning, and new ones are arriving. Change is inevitable and part of daily life in hospitality. Guests are increasingly demanding. But I believe that, beyond the high-standard services we offer, our greatest difference is the care we have for people, for all people,” says Delahaye as we try the seasonal menu at La Cour Jardin. This restaurant, which operates in the inner courtyard during the warmer months, has brought Bretagne to the table this season. The inspiration comes from this region in northwestern France, where chef Jean Imbert spent part of his childhood. It’s a place renowned for its exceptional seafood, vegetables, and dairy products.

As the maître d’hôtel Juliette Fayaud, whom we know from brasserie Le Relais Plaza, flambés lobsters tableside, Delahaye tells us about the recent renovations, totaling over €80 million, which improve technology, sustainability practices, and comfort to suites and apartments without sacrificing classic Parisian style.

“Every space was designed to offer a personalized experience, with smart residential automation and thermal insulation,” he explains.

Entering our suite, the first surprise was the new color palette. The classic red and gray gave way to soft beige and yellow tones, bringing a fresh touch to this historic property.

The ambitious renovation project, led by the renowned interior design firm Moinard Bétaille, introduced a contemporary approach blending comfort, functionality, and sophistication while preserving the hotel’s DNA.

In terms of sustainability, the hotel adopted reusable containers for personal care products, recyclable amenities, and eco-friendly materials and processes all without compromising luxury. “High-end hospitality must constantly evolve. What we did here was modernize while preserving the ‘soul’ of the hotel, in dialogue with the highest demands of the contemporary world,” says François Delahaye.

Another highlight is the creation of the Terrace Duplex Suite, the only accommodation spread over two floors, featuring a private terrace with panoramic city views. Covering 98 square meters in Art Deco style, it includes a living room, dining room, private gym, sauna, and a fully equipped kitchen. It’s the feeling of being at home with all the services of a five-star hotel.

To offer a wellness haven in the heart of the city and attract new audiences, exclusive experiences were introduced at the Spa Dior, which is also open to non-guests. This true oasis goes beyond traditional aesthetics. The massage we experienced is, without a doubt, a memorable experience. It’s a perfect choice for preparing for a day in Paris or after sightseeing in the French capital.

Gastronomy

There are five fine dining options you can choose:  Michelin-starred Jean Imbert au Plaza AthénéeLe Relais Plaza (both were closed for renovations during our stay), La GalerieLe BarLa Terrasse Montaigne and La Cour Jardin. On the evening we had dinner reservation at La Cour Jardin, rain changed our plans and those of everyone who had chosen courtyard tables.

Within minutes the attentive team reorganized the tables inside Jean Imbert au Plaza Athénée, and all guests were served to the soothing sound of raindrops against the glass. 

While Paris was under a downpour outside, inside the attraction was the ‘ballet’ of dishes harmonized with wines from the extensive list suggested by the sommelier.

As Delahaye told us early this day: “More than ostentation, contemporary luxury is about personalized experiences, authenticity, and the freedom to enjoy every moment at your own pace.” We ended our stay with a taste of Parisian rhythm and the certainty that this palace is more relevant than ever and ready for the future.

For us, there is something truly unique here, and you need to experience it to understand that the “Plazá” goes far beyond the simple concept of luxury hospitality.
